He was a good natured guy! It is situated on the grounds of the Xiengkeo Palace which belonged to the famous nationalist hero of Luang Prabang,<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grandluangprabang.com\/prince.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prince Phetsarath.\u00a0\u00a0He chose this site for its tranquility, its stunning views of the mighty Mekong River, and the breathtaking landscape of mountains surrounding Luang Prabang<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>My room was clean and tidy and the view of the lily pond and the lawns from my private veranda and our breakfast veranda on the riverwere outstanding. Luang Prabang is at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Kahn rivers. It was the center of the Lao Kingdom from the 14th \u00a0to 16th century when the capital was moved to Vientiane and it became one of the 3 Lao Kingdoms (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Champasak).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Luang Prabang is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. \u00a0This designation requires the town to restrict development and preserve historical sites. \u00a0By doing this, the town has enjoyed the &#8220;prosperity&#8221; of numerous foreign visitors and their currencies.<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4129.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1605\" alt=\"IMG_4129\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4129.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4129.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4129-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><strong>This is Dao, our Laotian country guide. It is the subject of Ole&#8217;s sketch (above). \u00a0The temple was built in 1560. It has low sweeping roofs and is decorated with glass tile mosaics. The little white building on the left is a place where worshipers can leave offerings. \u00a0The little pointy buildings in the far right are &#8220;Stupas&#8221; which are funeral memorials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4136.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1607\" alt=\"IMG_4136\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4136.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4136.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4136-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><strong>In a separate building is this 40 foot long funeral chariot last used in 1959 for the funeral of King Sisavangvong (say that 3 times fast?). \u00a0It is decorated with guilded &#8220;Nagas&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Buddhist Naga generally has the form of a large cobra-like snake, usually with a single head but sometimes with as many as nine. At least some of the Nagas are capable of using magic powers to transform themselves into a human semblance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Nagas are believed to live in the <a title=\"Laos\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laos\">L<\/a>aotian stretch of the Mekong river or estuaries. Lao mythology maintains that the Nagas are the protectors of Vientiane\u00a0and by extension, the Lao state. The Naga is incorporated extensively into Lao iconography, and features prominently in Lao culture throughout the length of the country, not only in Vientiane.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4138.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1608\" alt=\"IMG_4138\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4138.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4138.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_4138-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the interior of the Wat Xieng Thong temple. The Buddha is sitting there surrounded by golden offerings. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know what stops people from swiping a souvenir. There&#8217;s always a big crowd, but I saw very little being sold.
