This was another of OAT&#8217;s educational and buying experiences. \u00a0It was much more educational (to me) than the Gem Factory in Bangkok. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is a typical spirit house with offering placed fresh daily.\u00a0House spirits, as the name infers, are the spirits that inhabit and surround a house or building. Dao outlined the course of the river from the Tibetan plateau to delta on the East China sea (aka The East Sea).\u00a0The Mekong\u00a0is the world&#8217;s 12th-<a title=\"List of rivers by length\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_rivers_by_length\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">longest river<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0and the 7th-longest in Asia. Dao demonstrated the still that converts rice wine to rice whisky. \u00a0I took a taste, it was potent stuff: 100 proof. Over the centuries, this temple has collected thousands of donated and discarded Buddha relics. Hmmmm&#8230; \u00a0Note the big bottle of beer on the right. \u00a0That was standard size.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When we arrived back at the Grand Hotel, some folks rented bikes and took a ride around the area. \u00a0Pete took a ride, I took a nap. \u00a0That night we all went to the &#8220;Spirit \u00a0Indochina&#8221; \u00a0 restaurant for a nice outdoor dinner. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Indochina was a term that referred to the French colonial federation: now comprising the three independent states of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The area was held by the French from 1887 to 1941 when it was handed over to the invading Japanese in WWII.\u00a0When the war ended, France expected the other Allied Powers to return its Indochinese colonies to its control.
