We took our shoes off, put on a neck scarf , sat on little (for me) seats on a mat facing bamboo baskets containing \u00a0cooked &#8220;Sticky Rice&#8221; and waited. That was the signal for the daily procession by the 250+\/- monks from the many temple in Luang Parang to collect rice from the villagers for the day. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t able to get good shots of us actually putting small rice balls in each pot so I shot pictures of others doing it in front of a temple instead. \u00a0As I said: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">This is a daily occurrence.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 There was even a little beggar boy along the route. Perhaps he \u00a0was looking for a handout, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One note about the monks: Most rural families send sons to the monasteries for schooling. \u00a0This gives the boys some education and shows respect for the parents. \u00a0 There are public schools, but they cost a lot, so monasteries are a better choice for many. \u00a0Rural girls generally get little or no formal education unless it&#8217;s at a private ($$) school. These are very general statements and do not reflect all Laotian education.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After feeding the monks, we we&#8217;re each given an item to buy in the &#8220;Morning Market&#8221;. Each of us had an item written in phonetic Laotian. \u00a0Peter and I set out together. Here are some of the foods for sale in the market. Most people do not have refrigerators and buy food day-to-day.<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4311.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" cooked pastries shown here. They were cooked in two parts and put together into a ball and served in a little cup made from a banana leaf (on the left). They were sweet and tasty and made a nice morning snack Note the cooker: It was a standard item everywhere. A cement &#8220;bucket&#8221; that was fueled from an opening on one side and had 3 prongs to hold up a wok.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It turned out that our item was a jug of cooking oil. \u00a0I came into use later when we cooked part of our own lunch. \u00a0Other folks bought other ingredients. We then returned to the Grand Hotel for breakfast.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our next event was quite a ways out of town. \u00a0We took our bus to the Laotian village of \u00a0Thin Keow. Of course, Pete had to try it. That&#8217;s &#8220;Dammit Janet&#8221; on the seesaw.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4383.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1728\" alt=\"IMG_4383\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4383.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4383.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_4383-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><strong>This is the Hnomg village. \u00a0Most of the people were away working in the fields.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is a bit of Hmong history:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hmong\u00a0are an Asian ethnic group from the mountainous regions of <a title=\"China\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">China<\/span><\/a>, <a title=\"Vietnam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnam\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnam<\/span><\/a>, <a title=\"Laos\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laos\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laos<\/span><\/a>, and <a title=\"Thailand\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thailand<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Hmong groups began a gradual southward migration in the 18th century due to political unrest and to find more arable land. Hmong people are known to be fiercely independent and rich in their culture, art, religion, family life and martial history (polygamy), and are distinguished by costumes and dress (fabric patterns represent fruit, vegetables, farming, chickens, eggs, etc.)<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hmong_people#cite_note-5\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During the American War (aka Vietnam War)\u00a0the <a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">United States<\/span><\/a> government recruited thousands of Hmong people in Laos to fight against invading military forces from North <a title=\"Vietnam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnam\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnam<\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"Communist\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communist\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">communist<\/span><\/a> <a title=\"Pathet Lao\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pathet_Lao\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pathet Lao<\/span><\/a> insurgents, known as the Secret War. During the <a title=\"Vietnam War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnam_War\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnam War<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Laotian Civil War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laotian_Civil_War\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laotian Civil War<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Hmong people were singled out for retribution by the <strong>Khmer Rouge\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0and <a title=\"Vietnamese Army\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnamese_Army\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnamese Army<\/span><\/a> when they took over the Laotian government from them in 1975. Hundreds of thousands of Hmong refugees fled to Thailand seeking political asylum. The siding is split bamboo flattened into &#8220;planks&#8221; with a roof made from palm fronds. The interior is spartan: Dirt floor, cooking fire in the center, and beds and possessions on raised platforms around the outside walls. This is first wife. If he is prosperous, he may have others. \u00a0Through Dao (our Laotian guide) the farmer told us about his farm and home. He spoke with mature confidence. \u00a0His wife was dressed in a festive outfit for our visit. Hmong raised domestic animals for food consumption and for special occasions like wedding and ritual sacrifices.\u00a0At left center, a man and woman are using a mill stone to grind maize (corn) and rice to feed their animals, as well as to make cakes and noodles. On the bottom is a scene depicting women tending their garden. The Khaen made a low moaning sound sort of like the low notes on a bagpipe. \u00a0His dance was whirling and jumping. \u00a0He acted a bit dizzy and I thought he&#8217;d fall, but he didn&#8217;t. The Hmong village was adjacent to the Laotian village soccer field and some Laotion boys stopped for a moment to watch.
