Many of the dead were former political prisoners who were kept by the Khmer Rouge in their <a title=\"Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuol_Sleng_Genocide_Museum\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tuol Sleng detention center<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today, Choeung Ek is a memorial, marked by this\u00a0<a title=\"Buddhist\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buddhist\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Buddhist<\/span><\/a> <a title=\"Stupa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stupa\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">stupa<\/span><\/a>. The stupa has <a title=\"Acrylic glass\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acrylic_glass\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">acrylic glass<\/span><\/a> sides and is filled with more than 5,000 human skulls. Some of the lower levels are opened during the day so that the skulls can be seen directly. Many have been shattered or smashed in.<\/span><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5135.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2036\" alt=\"IMG_5135\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5135.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5135.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5135-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tourists are encouraged by the <a title=\"Politics of Cambodia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Politics_of_Cambodia\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cambodian Government<\/span><\/a> to visit Choeung Ek. Apart from the stupa, there are pits from which the bodies were exhumed. Human bones still litter the site.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5095.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2023\" alt=\"IMG_5095\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5095.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5095.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5095-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Here is a map of this &#8220;Killing Field&#8221;. \u00a0The burial pits are shown at the top, the Stupa is in the center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Killing Fields occupy a number of sites in <a title=\"Cambodia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cambodia\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cambodia<\/span><\/a> where large numbers of people were killed and buried by the <a title=\"Khmer Rouge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khmer_Rouge\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Khmer Rouge<\/span><\/a> regime \u00a0 during its rule of the country from 1975 to 1979, immediately after the end of the <a title=\"Cambodian Civil War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cambodian_Civil_War\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cambodian Civil War<\/span><\/a> (1970\u20131975).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Analysis of 20,000 mass grave sites\u00a0indicate at least 1,386,734 victims of execution.\u00a0\u00a0Estimates of the total number of deaths resulting from Khmer Rouge policies, including disease and starvation, range from 1.7 to 2.5\u00a0million out of a 1975 population of roughly 8 million. In 1979, communist <a title=\"Vietnam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnam\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vietnam<\/span><\/a> invaded <a title=\"Democratic Kampuchea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Kampuchea\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Democratic Kampuchea<\/span><\/a> and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime and brought an end to the killings.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5096.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone From 1963 to 1981, he served as the <a title=\"General Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Secretary_of_the_Communist_Party_of_Kampuchea\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General Secretary<\/span><\/a> of the <a title=\"Communist Party of Kampuchea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communist_Party_of_Kampuchea\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Communist Party of Kampuchea<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0As such, he became the leader of Cambodia on April 17, 1975, when his forces captured Phnom Penh. From 1976 to 1979, he also served as the <a title=\"Prime Minister of Cambodia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prime_Minister_of_Cambodia\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">prime minister<\/span><\/a> of <a title=\"Democratic Kampuchea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Kampuchea\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Democratic Kampuchea<\/span><\/a>. He presided over a communist <a title=\"Dictatorship\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dictatorship\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dictatorship<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that imposed a radical form of <a title=\"Agrarian socialism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agrarian_socialism\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">agrarian socialism<\/span><\/a> on the country. His government forced urban dwellers to relocate to the countryside to work in collective farms and forced labor projects. The combined effects of executions, forced labor, malnutrition, and poor medical care caused the deaths of approximately 25 percent of the Cambodian population.\u00a0\u00a0In all, an estimated 1 to 3 million people (out of a population of slightly over 8 million) died due to the policies of his four-year premiership. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pol Pot was driven from power by the invading Vietnamese in 1979. For the next few years he lived remotely on the Thai-Cambodian border, where he died either from heart failure or suicide in 1998. also Known as &#8220;S-21&#8221;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5161.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2046\" alt=\"IMG_5161\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5161.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5161.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_5161-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The site is a former <a title=\"High school\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High_school\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">high school<\/span><\/a> which was used as the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) by the <a title=\"Khmer Rouge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khmer_Rouge\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Khmer Rouge<\/span><\/a> regime from its rise to power in 1975 to its fall in 1979. Tuol Sleng \u00a0means &#8220;Hill of the Poisonous Trees&#8221; or &#8220;<a title=\"Strychnine tree\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strychnine_tree\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Strychnine<\/span><\/a> Hill&#8221;.
