Mary Ann and I headed to western Canada this time with 41 Grand Circle Travelers (GCT) to see the Rocky Mountains.\u00a0 Our trip was from June 10th to the 24th, 2016.<\/h2>\n<h2>We started in Wells, Maine; took the Downeaster to Boston; took Air Canada through Toronto to Calgary, Alberta to start our journey (This was Day 1).<\/h2>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #993300;\">You&#8217;ll noticed some unusual underlining and some unusual pictures. This is Suzanne&#8217;s home town (after moving here from New Brunswick, Canada).<\/h2>\n<h2>Cochrane is on the Bow River which flows from the Rockies through Calgary to join many other rivers and on to the Hudson Bay. Cache was a bright, alert and nimble fellow.<a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1025-Cochran-04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3410\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1025-Cochran-04.jpg\" alt=\"1025 Cochran 04\" width=\"640\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1025-Cochran-04.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1025-Cochran-04-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>In 2003, the Cochrane Centennial Committee commissioned Studio West Bronze Foundry and Art Gallery to create a bronze sculpture honoring the hard working pioneer women who were involved in the dairy business. The statue was placed on First Street across from the Rockyview Hotel and there are around 40 names of Cochrane area women inscribed at the base of the Legacy Statue. As she appears to be feeding chickens, with a milk can at her side, many people have been known to call her \u201cthe chicken lady\u201d, but who is she really? Her name is Ella Patton and she\u00a0 and her family came to Alberta in 1900 from Alta, Iowa.\u00a0 Google her name for more info.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"exposureImage exposureCurrentImage\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cochraneeagle.com\/apps\/pbcsi.dll\/bilde?Site=GG&amp;Date=20150108&amp;Category=COE0903&amp;ArtNo=301089998&amp;Ref=AR\" alt=\"The Legacy Statue.\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0Nestled at the foot of Big Hill in the Bow Valley\u00a0west of Calgary, the Cochrane Rockyview Hotel and its saloon are among the oldest establishments of their kind\u00a0in Alberta\u00a0that are still standing and in operation.<\/h2>\n<h2>During Alberta\u2019s early years, it was illegal in many municipalities for men and women to \u201cconsort\u201d with each other while consuming alcoholic spirits.\u00a0 They would\u00a0climb in their\u00a0horse and buggy, or take the train, or, if they were lucky, drive\u00a0one of them new-fangled automobiles a few miles west to Cochrane for a little company with the opposite sex over a cold drink.\u00a0 Sometimes this sinful activity\u00a0would lead to dancing or singing and the couples would stay late into the night, before heading back to Calgary or upstairs to a Hotel room.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1030-Rockville-Hotel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3411\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1030-Rockville-Hotel.jpg\" alt=\"1030 Rockville Hotel\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1030-Rockville-Hotel.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1030-Rockville-Hotel-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Across the street is Mackay&#8217;s Ice Cream.\u00a0 Passionate family commitment and a delicious recipe have paired to make Mackay\u2019s Ice Cream a great Cochrane tradition for over 65 years. Deep-rooted in its geography, Mackay\u2019s Ice Cream is made in Cochrane with 100% Canadian high butterfat cream. <span style=\"font-family: Helvetica,Geneva,Arial,SunSans-Regular,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2>No, we did not try a scoop &#8211; too rich and expensive! We ate at a Subway&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.2931771.1422293883%21\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/mackay-s-ice-cream-shop-in-cochrane.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.2931771.1422293883!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/mackay-s-ice-cream-shop-in-cochrane.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>One final historic statue: This statue is of a cowboy on horseback overlooking the Cochrane Ranch Historic Site. It was commissioned in honor of the working cowboy of the early ranching days in the area.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.groundspeak.com\/waymarking\/display\/5982f5a2-bba0-48ea-9c18-9e961014eb2b.jpg\" name=\"rollimg\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Enough about Cochrane.\u00a0 Lets get back to Calgary.<\/h2>\n<h2>Calgary is a cosmopolitan Alberta city with numerous skyscrapers, owes its rapid growth to its status as the center of Canada\u2019s oil industry. However, it\u2019s still steeped in the western culture that earned it the nickname \u201cCowtown,\u201d evident in the Calgary Stampede, its massive July rodeo and festival that grew out of the farming exhibitions once presented here.<\/h2>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi ioKhzQCQ6OWE-pQOPx8XEepE\" src=\"https:\/\/images.megapixl.com\/609\/6099285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"716\" height=\"393\" \/>We&#8217;re told that many of the high rise buildings are corporate offices and hotels.\u00a0 Many of the others are residences for the city&#8217;s office work force.<\/h2>\n<h2>Below is the Calgary Tower.<\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The Tower is a 627\u00a0ft free standing observation <a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Tower\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tower\">tower<\/a>\u00a0 Originally called the Husky Tower, it was conceived as a joint venture between Marathon Realty Company Limited and <a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Husky Energy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Husky_Energy\">Husky Oil<\/a> as part of an <a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Urban renewal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urban_renewal\">urban renewal<\/a> plan and to celebrate Canada&#8217;s <a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Canadian Centennial\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Centennial\">centennial<\/a> of 1967. The tower was built at a cost of <a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Canadian dollar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_dollar\">$<\/a>3,500,000 and weighs approximately 10,900 tons, of which 60% is below ground. It opened to the public on June 30, 1968 as the tallest structure in Calgary, and the tallest in Canada outside of Toronto. It was renamed the Calgary <\/span>Tower in 1971.<\/h2>\n<h2>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Suncor Energy Centre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suncor_Energy_Centre\">Petro-Canada Center<\/a>&#8216;s<\/span><\/span> west tower overtook the Calgary Tower as the tallest structure in Calgary in 1983. Until 2011, this 706\u00a0ft skyscraper was the tallest building in the city, while the twin-towers of <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Bankers Hall\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bankers_Hall\">Bankers Hall<\/a><\/span>, completed in 1989 and 2000 have also surpassed the Calgary Tower. <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"The Bow (skyscraper)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bow_%28skyscraper%29\">The Bow<\/a><\/span>, completed in 2012, is now the tallest building in Western Canada at 779 feet.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1060-Calgary-Tower.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3416\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1060-Calgary-Tower.jpg\" alt=\"1060 Calgary Tower\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1060-Calgary-Tower.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1060-Calgary-Tower-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>This is the Bow Building.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of the few buildings in Calgary that, to me, has some character. (Note: The flat prairie in the distance.)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi iVQSkPRdCIk0-pQOPx8XEepE\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peri.com.mx\/shared\/references\/img\/the-bow-calgary_01_lg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>A little more down to earth were the food trucks that were parked on a street close to our nice Sheraton Hotel.\u00a0 There was some sort of a &#8220;do&#8221; going on, but the food trucks seemed to be the big hit.<\/h2>\n<h2>We hung out here on a GCT &#8220;afternoon on our own&#8221;. A special feature of the GCT&#8217;s itineraries (which means &#8220;no cost to GCT&#8221;.)<a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1050-Calgar-Food-Trucks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3417\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1050-Calgar-Food-Trucks.jpg\" alt=\"1050 Calgar Food Trucks\" width=\"640\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1050-Calgar-Food-Trucks.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1050-Calgar-Food-Trucks-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>We ended the day at Saltlik&#8217;s restaurant with a delicious CAB (Certified Alberta Beef) steak: Tender and Juicy!<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tummypoints.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/nok1937smxo5.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/tummypoints.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/nok1937smxo5.jpg\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>This was our dining room down in the basement.\u00a0 It held the 40+ GCT&#8217;ers with no problem.<\/h2>\n<h2>Most of us had the &#8220;CAD&#8221;: Certified Alberta Beef.\u00a0 It was tender and flavorful.\u00a0 We also had a GCT treated bottle of wine.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saltlik.com\/flashgallery\/img\/4%20-%20Private%20Dining%20Room.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/www.saltlik.com\/flashgallery\/img\/4%20-%20Private%20Dining%20Room.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>With full tummies, we ended our Day 2.\u00a0 Tomorrow we head south to Waterton Lakes, AB and into the &#8220;real&#8221; Rockies.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/canadian-rockies-page-02\/\">Go To Page 2<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Best of the Canadian Rockies Here we go again!
