We rode our bus about 75 miles from Torremolinos for an &#8220;optional &#8221; visit to Gibraltar.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01295-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4339\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01295-2-1024x643.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01295-2-1024x643.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01295-2-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01295-2-768x482.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Here is the Rock from across Gibraltar bay.<\/h2>\n<h2>The use of Prudential&#8217;s symbol, the Rock of Gibraltar, began after an advertising agent passed Laurel Hill, a volcanic neck, in Seacaucus, New Jersey, on a train in the 1890s.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The related slogans &#8220;Get a Piece of the Rock&#8221; and &#8220;Strength of Gibraltar&#8221; are also still quite widely associated with Prudential,<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0though current advertising uses neither of these.<\/h2>\n<h2>Through the years, the symbol went through various versions, but in 1989, a simplified pictogram symbol of the Rock of Gibraltar was adopted. It has been used ever since.<\/h2>\n<h2>We&#8217;re used to seeing the left end, but there is more Rock than you&#8217;d expect.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-00191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4340\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-00191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-00191.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-00191-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>This is Gibraltar Bay. The Rock is at the top right.\u00a0 The bay is huge!\u00a0 It&#8217;s easy to see how important this bay in maritime history.<\/h2>\n<h2>Europa Point (pictures later) is at the tip of the rock.<\/h2>\n<h2>The bay&#8217;s strategic position at the mouth of the Mediterranean has made it a much-contested body of water over the centuries. It has been the site of several major sea battles, notably the Battle of Gibraltar\u00a0(1607) and the Battle of Algerciras\u00a0(1801). During the Second World War,<\/h2>\n<h2>Italy\u00a0launched Human torpedos\u00a0from Algeciras on several occasions in attempts to sink British ships moored in the Gibraltar harbor, with mixed success.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01315.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4341\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01315.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01315-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>This was our Gibraltar Tour Guide.\u00a0 He is a Brit.\u00a0 After all, Gibraltar is a British Territory. It was captured during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704 &#8211; 1713 by an Anglo-Dutch\u00a0fleet in the name of Charles VI of Austria, the Habsburg\u00a0contender to the Spanish throne. sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The\u00a0tunnels of Gibraltar, constructed over the course of nearly 200 years principally by the British Army have made the Rock of Gibraltar a veritable warren of tunnels that housed guns, hangars, ammunition stores, barracks and hospitals&#8221;.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01365.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4349\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01365.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01365.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-01365-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The 20th century saw by far the greatest extent of tunneling when the Rock was turned into a huge underground fortress capable of accommodating 16,000 men and women along with all the supplies, ammunition and equipment needed to withstand a prolonged siege.<\/h2>\n<h2>Note the Hard Hat.\u00a0 They were required because many of from Luftwaffe bombing raids.\u00a0They were so well positioned and equipped that General Dwight Eisenhower used the Admiralty Tunnel for the Allied Command Headquarters in 1942 to plan the allied invasion of North Africa<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-00101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4362\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/A-00101.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"518\" The tunnel is one of the largest man made underground spaces without roof supports and was capable of housing 16,000 soldiers for up to 16 months. Here is one of my Naval Heroes: Lord Nelson.<\/h2>\n<h2>Vice Admiral\u00a0Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bront\u00e9\u00a0(29 September 1758\u00a0\u2013 21 October 1805) was a British flag officer\u00a0in the Royal Navy. He was noted for his inspirational leadership, superb grasp of strategy, and unconventional tactics, which together resulted in a number of decisive naval victories, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars.<\/h2>\n<h2>He was wounded several times in combat, losing the sight in one eye in Corsica\u00a0and most of one arm in the unsuccessful attempt to conquer Tenerife.
