Another short (45 Min.)\u00a0 hop to Maui.\u00a0Our first stop after landing was in the town of Wailuku. The group went to a local restaurant for lunch and Mary Ann and I had our sandwiches from the Marriott on Kaua’i.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After lunch we drove to the State Park in Iao Valley<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Iao Needle (K\u016bkaemoku) is the most famous la<\/strong>ndmark in the Iao State Park. It is a vegetation-covered lava remnant rising 1,200 feet from the valley floor or 2,250 feet\u00a0 when measured from sea level.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hawaiian god\u00a0K\u0101ne\u00a0is considered to be the procreator and the provider of life. He is associated with\u00a0wai\u00a0(fresh water) as well as clouds, rain, streams, and springs.\u00a0Kanaloa, the Hawaiian god of the underworld, is represented by the\u00a0phallic\u00a0stone of the Iao Needle.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Kapawa, a early king of Hawai\u02bb<\/span>i was buried here. Maui’s ruler\u00a0Kaka\u02bb<\/span>e, in the late 15th century, designated Iao Valley as a royal burial ground. Their remains were buried in secret places. In 1790, the\u00a0Battle of Kepaniwai\u00a0took place here, in which\u00a0Kamehameha the Great\u00a0defeated\u00a0Kalanik\u016bpule\u00a0and the Maui army during his campaign to unify the islands. The battle was said to be so bloody that dead bodies blocked Iao Stream, and the battle site was named\u00a0Kepaniwai\u00a0(“the damming of the waters”).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Wailuku river Flows through the Valley,\u00a0 \u00a0It’s a beautiful river clear and cool. It’s like many rivers in the mountains of New England. Note my curls! Eat your hearts out ladies (until I take my hat off.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We were told that the water was cold.\u00a0 You couldn’t prove it by these kids.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We drove up the long Iao Valley towards Lahaina and I got a picture of a Candle Nut tree and found a picture of some of the beads that are made from the nuts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At Lahaina we split a Dole Whip and rested on a bench next to “Bubba Gump’s Restaurant” That’s his suitcase with a “boxa choclits” on top.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the Hyatt Regency Maui.\u00a0 Our room was on the shady side (see arrow).\u00a0 It was super hotel with all the amenities, two pools and\u00a0 beautiful\u00a0 gardens. Also a nice beach (more on that later).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We were greeted in our room by a huge (4″) Praying Mantis.\u00a0 We left him alone as he was on the outside of our balcony screen.\u00a0 He was gone the next morning,<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

These are the views from our room .\u00a0 A nice golf course, 6 more hotels, and a vista beyond. We didn’t miss the ocean view in our hotel because those room were in the sun all day and their balconies were probably very hot (sour grapes?).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Black Crowned Night Heron<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A\u00a0 Talkative Parrot Named Shrek\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A very friendly White Cockatoo named Madison (with Chris)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

An Australian Black Goose<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A Flock of Pink Flamingos<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

African Crowned Cranes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Enough with the boids, already!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We checked out the beach at the hotel and decided that it was too rough for snorkeling there.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We hiked to “Black Rock Beach”. It’s a favorite “jumping off” spot, but the snorkeling was still very difficult- too much of a surge in the water motion for us old folks<\/strong>. But, the jumpers loved it!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We gave up on snorkeling and caught the shuttle bus back to the Hyatt.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That night we went with the group to the “Drums of the Pacific Lu’au.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the setting for the Lu’au. It’s right next to the ocean and the breezes were delightful!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the Lu’au Buffet.\u00a0 \u00a0It was pretty good: pork, chicken, many veggies and salads.\u00a0 There was even some Poi (see arrow). I had to taste it – it was awful!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The show was a real spectacle.\u00a0 Lots of pretty Hula girls, Hula guys, drums, ukuleles and fire. Here are a few pics:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I tried to get a picture of the band, but the girls got in the way…<\/strong><\/p>\n

That was it for the Lu’au.\u00a0 Time to pack our bags for the trip home and hit the hay!<\/strong><\/p>\n
