This is\u00a0The\u00a0Church of the Holy Spirit it\u00a0<strong>is the most famous church in Heidelberg.\u00a0It stands in the middle of the market place in the old center of Heidelberg not far from the funicular to the<strong>\u00a0Heidelberg castle<\/strong><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>. The steeple of the church, rising above the roofs, dominates the town.<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/478-Heidelberg-Cathedral.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-300\" title=\"478 Heidelberg Cathedral\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/478-Heidelberg-Cathedral-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/478-Heidelberg-Cathedral-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/478-Heidelberg-Cathedral-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/478-Heidelberg-Cathedral-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong>In 1398, the foundations of the current\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Gothic architecture\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gothic_architecture\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">late Gothic<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0church were laid on the site of a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Romanesque architecture\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanesque_architecture\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">late Romanesque<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Basilica\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basilica\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">basilica<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0which, in turn, had been erected in the place of even an older church. Their back wall is part of the church. They actually pre-date the building of the cathedral and have been &#8220;grandfathered&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here, on a cute side street, is the shop where they sell the famous &#8220;Kissing Cookies&#8221;. \u00a0At an earlier time, young people were not allowed to do nasty stuff like kissing, so the Heidelberg University boys gave a special girl a &#8220;Kissing Cookie&#8221;. For five centuries, the powerful Prince Electors of the Palatinate region, members of the House of Wittelsbach, resided here. In 1693, during the War of Palatinate Succession, the castle with its towers was destroyed. The magnificent ruins became the symbol of an entire epoch, the German Romantic period. The Heidelberg Tun or Grosses Fass holds over 58,000 US gallons and stands an impressive 18 feet high. To encourage partying, a staircase leads to a dance floor installed on its top so people could drink and dance all evening! The first bridge was recorded at this site in 1284. But like all of the wooden bridges that followed, it eventually fell prey to high water and ice. This finally prompted Prince Elector Carl Theodor to construct the first stone bridge in 1786-88. Raised vents in its middle allowed water to drain off quickly when the river flooded.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On March 29, 1945, the<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<a title=\"Wehrmacht\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wehrmacht\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wehrmacht<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0left the city after destroying three arches of the old bridge. They also destroyed the more modern bridge downstream. The U.S. Army (3rd Infantry, 7th Army) entered Heidelberg on March 30, 1945. The civilian population surrendered without resistance. The bridge was later reconstructed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After a busy day sight seeing we reboarded our buses and rode to Speyer where our ship awaited. \u00a0On the river bank was this neat Beer Garden. \u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Beergarden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-313\" title=\"504 Speyer Beergarden\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Beergarden-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Beergarden-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Beergarden-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Beergarden-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>We didn&#8217;t stop in because we would have missed another great dinner of &#8220;<em>Sliced Braised Veal Shank with Chopped Parsley, Garlic, and Lemon Zest served on Creamy Polenta and Roasted Root Vegetables<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0(Actually, for a change, Mary Ann and I had the Vegetarian alternative: &#8220;<em>Eggplant Parmigiana with Tomato and Mozzarella Cheese<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0It was delicious!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And so ended Day 10.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>During the night our ship sailed to Pittersdorf and \u00a0Day11 started with a bus ride. \u00a0We left the ship at Pittersdorf and motored to Baden Baden.<a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Bus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-314\" title=\"504 Speyer Bus\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Bus-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Bus-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Bus-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/504-Speyer-Bus-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong>All the buses we used were practically brand new. \u00a0They we clean and comfortable with large viewing windows. \u00a0The aisle seat even had a little lever that would move the seat into the aisle a couple of inches to add a bit more butt room. Each color group rode in a separate bus with our own Program Manager who gave interesting talks as we traveled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We arrived at Baden Baden and walked through town to the Casino.<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/510-Baden-Baden-Casino.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-315\" title=\"510 Baden Baden Casino\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/510-Baden-Baden-Casino.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/510-Baden-Baden-Casino.jpg 640w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/510-Baden-Baden-Casino-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/510-Baden-Baden-Casino-449x300.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I was a bit disappointed. I thought it would be big and glitzy with limos cruising around, like Las Vegas. It wasn&#8217;t. The outside is rather plain. \u00a0It&#8217;s the inside that is fancy. We toured the Casino in the morning, when it was not functioning. \u00a0Maybe there are limos in the evening?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The opulent Baden-Baden Casino was opened in 1838 and is reminiscent of the 19th century or a 1970s James Bond film, depending on your proclivities.\u00a0Its d\u00e9cor, which seeks to emulate &#8211; indeed, outdo &#8211; the splendor of France&#8217;s famed Versailles, led Marlene Dietrich to call it &#8216;the most beautiful casino in the world&#8217;. After observing the action here, Dostoevsky was inspired to write\u00a0<em>The Gambler<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You need your passport or European national ID card to enter when the Casino is operating, and cell phones must be switched off. Games include French and American roulette, blackjack and poker (Friday and Saturday only). Minimum stakes range from around \u20ac2 to around \u20ac50. You do not have to gamble but men must wear a jacket and tie. The rules for women are more relaxed but nothing too sporty (for example shorts) is permitted. But the times they are a-changin, even here: jeans, so long as they are neat, clean and without holes, are now permitted for both sexes. However, sports shoes remain forbidden.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the Roulette rooms looked like this:<\/strong><a the Casino area and went to downtown Baden Baden. \u00a0One street was the Rodeo Drive of Baden Baden complete with a red carpet. \u00a0You obviously needed money to shop here.<\/strong><a dress<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who play\u00a0<a title=\"Guitar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guitar\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">guitar<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and sing\u00a0<a title=\"Serenade\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serenade\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">serenades<\/span><\/a>. The tradition originated in\u00a0<a title=\"Spain\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spain<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Portugal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Portugal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a title=\"13th century\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/13th_century\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">13th century<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as a means of students to earn money or food. A member of a tuna is known as a\u00a0<em>tuno<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>sopista.\u00a0<\/em>(The sopistas were poor students, who made the most of their musical talent, cheerfulness and japing to stroll through the towns, visiting streets, squares and convents and entertaining people in return for a bowl of soup and a few coins to help them pay for their studies.) \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><\/em>We were familiar with Tuna Singers from our days living as &#8220;Winter Texans&#8221; along the Rio Grande. \u00a0A group from <em>San Luis Potos\u00ed\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0University would perform at the &#8220;Border Fest&#8221; in McAllen, TX\u00a0each year.
