He was born in\u00a0<a title=\"Colmar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colmar\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Colmar<\/span><\/a>, in the\u00a0<a title=\"Alsace\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alsace\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alsace<\/span><\/a>\u00a0region of France.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More than 1,000,000 francs were raised by subscription throughout France for the building of the statue. In 1879.\u00a0\u00a0Funds were collected throughout the United States for the building of the pedestal, about $300,000.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1881 Eiffel was contacted by\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Auguste Bartholdi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auguste_Bartholdi\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Auguste Bartholdi<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0who was in need of an engineer to help him to build the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Statue of Liberty\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statue_of_Liberty\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Statue of Liberty<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0Eiffel was selected because of his experience with wind stresses. Eiffel devised a structure consisting of a four legged pylon to support the copper sheeting which made up the body of the statue. In the Middle Ages this was a smelly slum that was occupied by fishermen and fishmongers.Now it&#8217;s fancy town houses. Kind of like a big &#8220;fold out&#8221; card. \u00a0It was painted for the\u00a0<a title=\"Hospital Brothers of St. Anthony\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hospital_Brothers_of_St._Anthony\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Monastery of St. Anthony<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in<a title=\"Isenheim\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isenheim\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Isenheim<\/span><\/a>\u00a0near Colmar, which specialized in hospital work. The Antonine monks of the monastery were noted for their care of plague sufferers as well as their treatment of skin diseases, such as\u00a0<a title=\"Ergotism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ergotism\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ergotism<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the full sized first panel. Riquewihr looks today more or less as it did in the 16th century (Except for the tourists!).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Riquewihr was one of the few towns in the area not to be badly damaged during\u00a0<a title=\"World War II\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">World War II<\/span><\/a>.
