It also ranks as the world\u2019s 6th busiest by international passenger traffic\u00a0and the world\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"World's busiest airports by cargo traffic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ask.com\/wiki\/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_cargo_traffic?qsrc=3044\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">17th largest for cargo tonnage<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"color: #000000;\">49.8 million passengers passed through the airport in 2011.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We were met at the airport\u00a0by Nicole one of our three super cruise &#8220;Program Managers&#8221; . She got us all together (there were 10 of us from Boston on the plane plus another 15 more that arrived on another flight). A\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Remembrance of the Dead\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remembrance_of_the_Dead\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remembrance of the Dead<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0ceremony is held at the monument every year on 4 May to commemorate the casualties of World War II and subsequent armed conflicts. <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/038-National-Monument.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21\" title=\"038 National Monument\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/038-National-Monument-760x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/038-National-Monument-760x1024.jpg 760w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/038-National-Monument-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The monument is a concrete conical pillar 72 feet in height, covered entirely by white\u00a0<a title=\"Travertine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travertine\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">travertine<\/span><\/a>\u00a0stone. On the front of the pillar is a relief entitled\u00a0<em>De Vrede<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;Peace&#8221;), consisting of four chained male figures, representing the suffering endured during the war. To either side of these central figures are two male sculptures representing members of the\u00a0<a title=\"Dutch resistance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_resistance\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dutch resistance<\/span><\/a>, the left figure symbolizing the resistance by the\u00a0<a title=\"Intelligentsia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intelligentsia\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">intelligentsia<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the right figure symbolizing the resistance by the working classes. Weeping dogs are at their feet, representing suffering and loyalty. Above the central relief is a sculpture of a woman with a child in her arms and doves flying around her, representing victory, peace, and new life. The palace was built as\u00a0<a title=\"City hall\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_hall\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">city hall<\/span><\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<a title=\"Dutch Golden Age\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_Golden_Age\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dutch Golden Age<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the seventeenth century. The building became the royal palace of King\u00a0<a title=\"Louis Bonaparte\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Bonaparte\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Louis Napoleon<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and later of the Dutch Royal House. It is situated in the west side of\u00a0<a title=\"Dam Square\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dam_Square\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dam Square<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the center of Amsterdam, opposite the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"National Monument (Amsterdam)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Monument_(Amsterdam)\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">War Memoria<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"National Monument (Amsterdam)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Monument_(Amsterdam)\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">l<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It was built on 13,659\u00a0wooden piles to keep it from sinking into the mud.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The\u00a0Amsterdam tramway network\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong style=\"color: #000000;\">runs on\u00a0<a title=\"Standard gauge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_gauge\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">standard gauge<\/span><\/a>\u00a0track. Since 1900, they have been powered by electricity, at 600\u00a0<a title=\"Volt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volt\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">V<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Direct current\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Direct_current\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DC<\/span><\/a>. At the termini of almost every tram line there is a suitable turning loop, so that the line can be operated by unidirectional trams.\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"color: #000000;\">With 16 lines, the network comprises a total of 132\u00a0miles of track.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is an aerial view of Amsterdam. It shows the network of canals (kind of like a huge spider web) . \u00a0The river at the top is not a river, but another canal: The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. \u00a0The ship we will embark upon is on this \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the Westerkerk (Western Church).\u00a0The Westerkerk is a church of the Protestant denomination in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 (at the same time our Pilgrims were squatting in the mud eating Indian Corn). It is next to Amsterdam&#8217;s Jordaan district, on the bank of the Prinsengracht canal. It happened to be almost behind the Hotel, so I left Mary Ann at the hotel and went to get a look-see. In the middle of the afternoon it looked a bit seedy. Just a few sex shops and some coffee houses that sold marijuana. \u00a0Maybe it looks more interesting at night? The ship was built in 1999 in the Netherlands and is registered in Malta. \u00a0It is 361 feet long, 37 feet wide, 20 feet high above the water, and weighs 1600 tons.. \u00a0it draws only 5 feet of water \u00a0It carries 140 passengers and has a crew of 38. \u00a0It has speeds of 8-11 MPH upstream and 14-18 MPH downstream. \u00a0It is a beautiful, but small, ship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is our &#8220;State Room&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite small but it \u00a0proved to be adequate for our stay. Th beds were comfortable and the bathroom was big enough for one. We didn&#8217;t have a deck plan for the ship and we got a lowered fare for &#8220;Category D&#8221;. \u00a0When we finally got a deck plan and saw that we were on the lowest deck, it would have cost us an additional $400.00 apiece to move up a deck. Needless to say, we stayed below and saved the money..<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Once on board and settled, Mary Ann and I went topside to watch the traffic on the Rhine-Amsterdam canal. \u00a0It was beautiful afternoon and we were beginning to relax and enjoy our jet lag.<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/110-On-Board.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-39\" title=\"110 On Board\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/110-On-Board-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/110-On-Board-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/110-On-Board-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prstevens.stonehippo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/110-On-Board-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><strong>Note: The other ships nearby were not part of the traffic &#8211; they were moored like us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>At dinner time, we made our way to the ships dining room for our first dinner. \u00a0We enjoyed an entree of &#8220;<em>Peach Chicken with Mustard Sauce, Gratin Potatoes, and Roasted Black Salsify<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0(I&#8217;ve only included the entrees in this web site. \u00a0We also had appetizer, soup, alternate entree like vegetarian, and choice of desserts.). The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable.
